Florida APRN CE Requirements | Mandatory License Renewal

Florida-licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) during each renewal period. These CE hours ensure compliance with Florida Board of Nursing regulations and help APRNs stay up to date with best practices in patient care and controlled substance prescribing.

To maintain an active APRN license in Florida, the following CE courses are required every renewal period (every two years):

• Two (2) hours on Prevention of Medical Errors
• Two (2) hours in Laws and Rules that govern the practice of Nursing
• Two (2) hours on Human Trafficking
• Three (3) hours on Safe and Effective Prescription of Controlled Substances 

• Two (2) hours in Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace (Required every other biennium, every 4 years)
• Two (2) hours in Domestic Violence Training (Required every third biennium, every 6 years, totaling 26 CE hours for that period)

As part of the Florida APRN license renewal requirements, all APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete a three-hour course on Safe and Effective Prescription of Controlled Substances. This course covers:

• Florida laws and regulations regarding controlled substance prescribing
• Strategies to prevent opioid misuse and addiction
• Best practices for pain management and patient safety
• Identifying patients at risk for substance use disorders
• Proper prescribing, documentation, and compliance with Florida Board of Nursing guidelines

APRNs must complete their required CE courses through an approved provider before their license renewal deadline. All CE credits must be reported to the CE Broker system, which tracks Florida nursing license compliance.
